World No Tobacco Day 2023: Protect Our Youth

World No Tobacco Day (WNTD) is an annual event held on 31 May to raise awareness about the dangers of tobacco use and to encourage people to quit smoking. The day was first observed in 1987, and it is now celebrated by more than 180 countries around the world.

The theme for World No Tobacco Day 2023 is “Protect Our Youth.” This year’s campaign focuses on the dangers of tobacco use and marketing to young people. Tobacco use is the leading cause of preventable death in the world, and it kills more than 8 million people each year. Tobacco use is also a major risk factor for cancer, heart disease, stroke, lung disease, and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

The tobacco industry is targeting young people with its marketing campaigns. Tobacco companies know that young people are more likely to start smoking if they are exposed to tobacco advertising and promotion. The tobacco industry spends billions of dollars each year on marketing, and much of this money is spent on targeting young people.

World No Tobacco Day is a call to action to protect our youth from the dangers of tobacco use. We can all do our part to help by talking to young people about the dangers of smoking, by refusing to smoke in front of young people, and by supporting smoke-free environments.

Here are some ways to help protect our youth from tobacco:

  • Talk to young people about the dangers of smoking.
  • Set a good example by not smoking.
  • Support smoke-free environments.
  • Encourage young people to make healthy choices.
  • Get involved in your community’s efforts to reduce tobacco use.

By working together, we can make a difference in the lives of young people and help to create a tobacco-free future.
