Young Chess Prodigy Nishwanth Ramkumar Leads India to Historic Under-7 Gold at Commonwealth Schools Championship
Seven-year-old talent from Akshara International School, Wakad, clinches team gold and narrowly misses individual podium at the international showdown in Kuala Lumpur.
PUNE / KUALA LUMPUR — In a major victory for Indian grassroots sports, seven-year-old chess sensation Nishwanth Ramkumar has steered India to a team gold medal at the inaugural Commonwealth Schools Chess Championship held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
A student of Akshara International School, Wakad (Pimpri-Chinchwad / West Pune corridor), Nishwanth showcased exceptional composure and tactical maturity in the Under-7 Standard classical format, helping India conquer the podium ahead of formidable squads from Sri Lanka and Malaysia.

A Decisive International Debut
Representing the nation in a classical nine-round event organized under the aegis of the Commonwealth Chess Association and FIDE (International Chess Federation), Nishwanth scored an impressive 6 out of 9 points. Competing alongside fellow Indian prodigies Akshath Chowan Lavudiya of Telangana (who topped with 8.5/9) and Ivaan Dubey of Maharashtra (second with 8/9), Nishwanth’s steady run on Board 3 cemented India’s dominance in the team category.
Although he tied for third place individually with 6/9 and narrowly missed the bronze medal on tie-break calculations, his performance ensured India took the top overall honors.

Stepping Up Through the National Ranks
Nishwanth’s journey onto the international stage began when he was just four years old. Over the last three years, the young strategist has systematically progressed through Pune District and Maharashtra State age-group championships.
His ticket to Kuala Lumpur was secured through a gritty performance at the 2025 National Schools Chess Championship in Guwahati, Assam, where he finished 14th nationwide, earning him an official spot on India’s contingent for this inaugural Commonwealth meet.

Pride for School, City, and State
The achievement marks a momentous milestone for Akshara International School, Pune, and the sports fraternity across Maharashtra. Grassroots chess programs and school-level training continue to propel Indian prodigies onto global podiums, with Nishwanth’s international triumph standing as a shining example of structured youth development, focus, and early athletic commitment.
