PUNE: Festive revelry turned violent late Monday night in the Lower Indira Nagar area of Bibwewadi, South Pune, after a 25-year-old youth was brutally assaulted with an iron object and a cement brick following an old dispute. Five individuals have been booked by the Bibwewadi police in connection with the assault, which also left the complainant’s mother and two acquaintances injured.

According to the First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Bibwewadi Police Station, the incident took place on the night of October 20 around 11:00 PM. The complainant, Ruturaj Rajendra Shinde (25), a resident of Lower Indira Nagar, had gone to escort his mother, Chhaya Shinde (46), and sister, Rutuja Shinde (23), back home from a local Durga Mata Navratri Garba event.

The Ambush

As the family was walking past Shri Clinic near Vihirichi Chawl, the complainant was intercepted by the suspects. Driven by past enmity, two key accused—identified as Shubham Suslade (21) and Yash Dhumal (21)—allegedly launched a sudden attack using a sharp/blunt iron object. Ruturaj sustained bleeding injuries to the area above his right ear and the left side of his head.

Moments later, a third accomplice, identified as Soham Bajare (approx. 20), picked up a roadside cement brick and hurled it at Ruturaj, striking his left shoulder.

Bystanders and Mother Injured

Two acquaintances of the victim, Pratik Suresh Bansode and Arnav Narayan Ghonde, who witnessed the commotion and attempted to step in, were also struck and wounded with blunt weapons. Ruturaj’s mother, Chhaya, intervened desperately to shield her son from the assault, sustaining scratches and minor wounds to her left hand during the struggle.

Two other associates, identified as Prajwal Ovhal (26) and Rakesh Kadam (32), were present at the scene and allegedly hurled abusive threats, aiding the attackers before fleeing the spot.

Medical Attention and Legal Action

Following the attack, the injured victims were rushed to Sassoon General Hospital, Pune, where they received medical treatment and wound dressing. Ruturaj formally approached the Bibwewadi police station on October 21 after being discharged from immediate medical care.

Based on his statement, the Bibwewadi police have initiated legal proceedings against all five accused under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) covering assault with dangerous weapons, voluntarily causing hurt, intentional insult with intent to provoke breach of peace, and common intention. Further investigation is underway.
