Supreme Court Agrees to Hear Plea Against Alleged Attacks on Protesters and Lawyers in Delhi

NEW DELHI — The Supreme Court agreed to list a plea concerning allegations of violent attacks by unidentified individuals on demonstrators and legal practitioners during ongoing demonstrations in the national capital.

The matter was mentioned before the Bench by Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan, who urged the apex court to intervene immediately against perpetrators targeting participants without facing police action.

The petition highlighted circulating video footage purportedly showing individuals engaging in acts of violence and boasting about their conduct on social platforms without facing legal repercussions.

“Private hooligans are not being stopped. They are making videos and proudly proclaiming what they have done. I am shocked. I’ve never seen a senior advocate being dragged on the streets. At some point, the Bench will have to come to the rescue of the Bar and young children,” submitted Senior Advocate Gopal Sankaranarayanan.

During the initial exchange, the Bench observed that the Supreme Court must not be turned into a political battleground. However, following clarification from the counsel that the application was a fresh petition specifically seeking legal accountability and protection against unlawful violence, the apex court agreed to schedule the hearing alongside other protest-related matters.
