Breaking News: Pune Police Enforce Section 144 for 18th Lok Sabha General Election
In a significant move ahead of the 18th Lok Sabha General Election, the Pune Police Commissionerate has invoked Section 144 of the Code of Criminal Procedure (CRPC) 1973. The order, issued by Pravin Pawar, Joint Commissioner of Police, Pune City, comes in accordance with the directives of the Election Commission of India.
The order, effective from 5th May 2024 at 18:00 hrs to 7th May 2024 at 24:00 hrs, imposes strict restrictions on political persons and individuals associated with political parties. Under the order, they are prohibited from residing or staying in constituencies where they are not registered as voters for the Lok Sabha elections.
This measure aims to ensure the smooth and peaceful conduct of the polling process, safeguarding public peace, and preventing any disturbances to public order and property. Violation of this order will attract legal consequences under Section 188 of the law.
The directive is a response to Election Commission’s letter dated 16th March 2024, which scheduled the 18th Lok Sabha General Election and mandated adherence to a model code of conduct until the polling day, slated for 7th May 2024 in the 35 Baramati Lok Sabha Constituency, covering 202 Purandar, 203 Bhor, and 211 Khadakwasla Assembly Constituencies.
Joint Commissioner Pravin Pawar underscored the necessity of this order to uphold the integrity of the electoral process and ensure fairness during the elections. The enforcement of Section 144 signifies the authorities’ commitment to maintaining law and order during this crucial democratic exercise.
Citizens are urged to comply with the directives outlined in the order to facilitate the conduct of free and fair elections in Pune and uphold the democratic values of the nation.
